The "Practical" works reproduce about 40% of B's published works; the remaining 60% (d ogmatic and polemic works) have never been reprinted. Volume I contains the Christian Directory, the other volumes have a variety of works, beginning with Reasons of the Christian Religion and concluding with Directions for Justices of Peace. B says this work is “Written chiefly for posterity, when sad Experience hath taught men to hate Theological Logical Wars, and to love, and see, and call for Peace.” A fine sentiment, but as it was largely Baxter’s departure from orthodoxy which caused the turmoil and ultimately split the Nonconformists, he was hardly the one to bemoan the want of peace. In this work he continues to advocate the doctrines which had stirred up the trouble in the first place. $950.

There are early signatures: one I can’t read at the top of the general title (seemingly the same hand which transcribed the portion of Psalm 39), several of John Sherp’s on the verso of the page facing the beginning of the Table of Contents and, in manuscript in a 17 th century hand, an excerpt from Psalm 39, covering the page, on the verso of the title to the Fourth Part $450.
