1.Baxter, Richard. The Practical Works Of ... Mr. Richard Baxter, In Four Volumes. With a Preface; Giving some Account of the Author, and of this Edition of his Practical Works. London: Thomas Parkhurst, Jonathan Robinson, and John Lawrence, 1707. 4 volumes, large folio, original paneled calf with the original labels, somewhat worn & with the hinges splitting, but mostly still holding firm (the front hinge on volume 4 is weakest); pieces of calf are missing from several bottom corners; there is some foxing/ light browning (apparently on leaves printed on paper of inferior quality), but the text generally is crisp and clean. Portrait (slightly creased) & extra engraved title, xlviii, 876; (8) 1000; (10) 946; (8) 960pp ***A good set of the scarce first edition of the collected works of this eminent Puritan and a very careful reprint of the original editions (by contrast the 23 volume edition of the same works, edited by William Orme, is heavily edited and should be avoided). The "Practical" works reproduce about 40% of B's published works; the remaining 60% (d ogmatic and polemic works) have never been reprinted. Volume I contains the Christian Directory, the other volumes have a variety of works, beginning with Reasons of the Christian Religion and concluding with Directions for Justices of Peace. With the ownership inscriptions of Saml. Bere on both titles.$1800.

3. Baxter, Richard. Aphorismes of Justification, With their Explication annexed. Wherein also is opened the nature of the Covenants, Satisfaction, Righteousnesse, Faith, Works, &c. London: for Francis Tyton, 1649. 12mo, old calf, sometime rebacked; LACKS title and pp. 169-188 of the Appendix at the rear, plus the 2 page errata. (21) 335 (12) 168 (of 188)pp ***Wing B1185, the first edition; not uncommon in institutional libraries, but rarely available for sale. With a bookplate reading as follows: “Presented from the library of the late Rev. James Stirling, Aberdeen.” This important work presented for the first time RB’s distinctive (heretical) doctrines, later modified, but never retracted. Unlike his practical works, which are of substantial value, his doctrinal and polemic works have never been reprinted. Scarce. $350. Sold.

 

4. Baxter, Richard. Aphorisms of Justification,... Hague: Abraham Brown, 1655. 12mo, original calf, hinges splitting but still sound; lacks endpapers. (14) 334pp ***Wing B1186, with the bookplate of ‘James Gillespie. Port-Glasgow’ inside the front cover and that of ‘The Presbyterian Historical Society of England’ inside the rear. This important work presented for the first time RB’s distinctive (heretical) doctrines, later modified, but never retracted. Unlike his practical works, which are of substantial value, his doctrinal and polemic works have never been reprinted. Scarce. $700.

James Cranford and the Author.; the fourth An Unsavoury Volume of Mr Jo. Crandon’s Anatomized: or a Nosegay of the Choicest Flowers in that Garden, Presented to Mr Joseph Caryl by Rich. Baxter. ***Wing B1187; the first and only edition of a work in which RB replies to various of his orthodox Reformed critics, an exercise he repeated at intervals throughout his life; it never seems to have occurred to him that there might be serious problems with his own doctrine. Though common enough in institutional libraries, not easy to find available for sale. $850.

(48) 136 (4) 124 (4) 118 (7) 299pp ***Wing B1281; one of B’s most important and comprehensive theological works; never reprinted. B says this work is “Written chiefly for posterity, when sad Experience hath taught men to hate Theological Logical Wars, and to love, and see, and call for Peace.” A fine sentiment, but as it was largely Baxter’s departure from orthodoxy which caused the turmoil and ultimately split the Nonconformists, he was hardly the one to bemoan the want of peace. In this work he continues to advocate the doctrines which had stirred up the trouble in the first place. $950.

Two identical titles are present, the second of which has a large corner torn away; possibly the first of the titles was added when the book was first bound some 300 years ago. 24pp ***Small 8vo, original sheep, sometime rebacked; old library label at foot of spine & library bookplate, but no markings in text. Now or Never was first printed in 1662 and was frequently reprinted; the Principles was first printed by Hartley in 1700. $175.

(21) 423pp ***Wing B1328, the first and only edition of this work expounding and defending B’s novel doctrine; though on the title he terms himself “A servant of Christ for Truth and Peace” he troubled and divided the church for over 40 years. (16) 17-198, 94 (2), 294 (8)pp***Wing B1332; a scarce doctrinal treatise, one of a fair number in which B defends his doctrine of justification against the criticisms of the orthodox; the second pagination is “An Answer to Dr. Tullies Angry Letter” and the third is “An Account of my Consideration of the Friendly, Modest, Learned Animadversions of Mr. Chr. Cartwright of York, on my Aphorisms.” From the Bishop Philpotts Library, Truro. Baxter’s doctrinal and polemical works have never been reprinted; the ‘Practical Works’ represent only about 40% of his literary output. $480.

Although considerably colored by Baxter's point of view, this account of B's life & times is indispensable to an understanding of the ecclesiastical history of the time. Although abridgements have been printed subsequently, this is the only complete edition. Still a good, sound copy. $650.

(54) 455pp ***Wing B1381; the ownership inscription “Henry Bellingham his booke.” (probably the original owner) is on the title and there are occasional MS notes in his hand throughout; HB notes on the front free endpaper: “Bucanus Common places exchanged for this book”; there is a subsequent inscription by Bellingham Graham and, also, an 1898 bookplate. $500.

(40) 184 (39) 185-304 (4) 368, 311 (5)pp [complete, the complex pagination notwithstanding]. ***Wing B1385; a good copy of an early edition of B's best known work; other than in the four volume 'Practical Works', all editions printed after 1688 are severely abridged. There are early signatures: one I can’t read at the top of the general title (seemingly the same hand which transcribed the portion of Psalm 39), several of John Sherp’s on the verso of the page facing the beginning of the Table of Contents and, in manuscript in a 17 th century hand, an excerpt from Psalm 39, covering the page, on the verso of the title to the Fourth Part $450. Sold.

The portrait (& tissue paper separating it from the title in volume 1) is somewhat foxed, with a bit of offsetting on the title.
